EPISO lets public grill candidates on issues
We vote and we have the right to ask for public services," said Victor Chavez, an EPISO leader from La Resurreccion church who told the candidates about the lack of sewage services and unsanitary conditions in his neighborhood. "We can let the candidates know we count." The candidates for commissioner of Precinct 1 in the Democratic primary election are Anna Perez, Tomas Rey and incumbent Luis Sariñana. Candidates for the Precinct 3 seat are Willie Gandara Jr., Frank Lopez, Alexandro Lozano, Rogelio Lozoya and Irma Sanchez. Lozoya did not attend the event. Only Democratic primary candidates were gathered. Republican challenger for the Precinct 1 seat, Alex Mendoza, also was not present. Yazd: Welcome to the desert
Once an important station on the Silk Road, with its historic mosques, minarets and ancient clay buildings, Yazd has resisted other Iranian cities' rush for modernity. It may possibly be the most beautiful desert city in the world. The word "Yazd" means "worship" -- apt since Yazd is known in the Islamic Republic as "the City of Muslims." Most of its half a million population follow the Islamic faith devoutly. Yet for a city renowned for its religious conservatism, Yazd is far more tolerant and open-minded than cities more accustomed to tourists such as Isfahan and Shiraz. This may be because Yazd is also the birthplace of the Zoroastrian religion. Very little is known about Zoroastrianism in the West but its influence is far reaching.
Tories demand Salmond quit as MP
However, the First Minister later announced he would be donating the one-third of his Holyrood salary to which he is entitled as a so-called "dual mandate" politician to a special trust fund to help community projects in the north-east of Scotland. It means that when his First Minister's salary of £76,907 a year is added to his £60,277 Westminster wage, Mr Salmond's total annual income is £137,184. A spokesman for Mr Salmond yesterday accused the Tories of "scraping the bottom of the barrel" and ignoring the Scottish national interest. "There is a clear advantage to Scotland in having a First Minister who can make key interventions at Westminster on Scotland's behalf," the spokesman said. "For example, on the UK Government's legislative programme or, for that matter, his exchanges with the Prime Minister on co-operating against terrorism." He added: "There is much more to being an MP than trooping the lobbies at Westminster, as is shown in the latest available league table for MPs' participation.
