HEAVENLY HOMES: Old church priory becomes affordable apartments

For nearly a century, Dominican friars made their home in the former St. Anne's Church priory at 818 Middle St. Today, the historic granite and marble three-story residence is about to be reborn as St. Dominic's Apartments, an affordable housing complex for the over-62 set. St. Dominic's, named for the friars who lived there, will have 18 one-bedroom apartments for seniors who meet eligibility requirements outlined by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Four units are handicapped accessible. Tenants will pay no more than 30 percent of their income in rent, and heat and hot water are included. "It's for singles and couples," said Ed Allard, project manager for Community Action for Better Housing, which is co-sponsoring the project with Catholic Social Services. Construction on the building began a year ago and has been substantial, costing $4.5 million.

Sealing house can enhance air quality, inhibit mold growth

Dear Jim: My children have allergies to mold. I want to make my house more airtight for better energy efficiency, but I heard this can exacerbate mold problems. What safe efficiency improvements can I make? - Karla S.

Dear Karla: People often think airtight, musty, mold-ridden indoor air quality is the price one has to pay for greater energy efficiency. Actually, making your house more energy efficient can positively affect air quality.First test your house for mold. Several laboratories offer home mold test kits. For a "viable" test, you grow your house test samples in a petri dish. At IMS Laboratory, it costs only about $10 for the kit. If you find mold growth, they charge about $35 more to analyze the mold types. Some types of mold cause few problems, while others are quite toxic.A better test is "nonviable" test, where the sample is analyzed for many types of mold.

Trying to keep calm in speed interviews

The notebook's left flap held copies of his resume. In the right flap was a piece of sheet music, written in Spanish. As a member of the college's Madrigal Singers, it's a piece he'll perform. And in a few hours, he'll use it in a tutoring session for a Spanish student at the school. He tutors every Monday and Tuesday night.Neeson was patient. He wasn't fidgeting with his hair or nervously tapping his feet on the floor. He was sitting up straight, calm and composed. The barrage of questions would soon come, almost immediately as the apologetic representatives from WABC, a certified public accountant firm, took their seats."What year are you?" asked Allan C. Sanders, a WABC principal."I'm a senior," Neeson answered with a smile."What made you want to go into this profession?" Sanders followed."What classes have you taken?" was the logical follow-up.
