Kindred: No more excuses for a half-empty Redbird Arena

A bunch of non home-grown players who are here for the basketball more than the education. Why do I want to cheer for them? How about ripping people for not spending more time helpign their kids with homework, or volunteering at a nursing home- you know, things that actually are important in the scheme of things... " .

A man allegedly stole this cab and narrowly escaped death when a fence impaled it.HYANNIS - A man is facing stolen vehicle charges but should consider himself lucky to be alive. Just minutes after 2008 was rung in, the suspect allegedly stole a Town Taxi at the Cape Cod Inn on Main Street in Hyannis. Moments later police discovered the taxi crashed off West Main Street at Jack Ellis Foreign Auto Repair. The cab had sheared a fence and the support pole for the fence impaled the entire cab missing the driver by inches.

The suspect 48-year old David Letsch was taken to Cape Cod Hospital with minor injuries. He's expected to be arraigned on Wednesday on charges of larceny of a motor vehicle, operating under the influence of alcohol, and operating to endanger.

Willows schools face gloomy budget forecast

WILLOWS — As the state budget crisis gathers over Glenn County, officials at Willows Unified School District are preparing for the worst.

"The worse-case scenario is that we are going to have to cut $1 million from the budget," said Steve Olmos, WUSD superintendent, at a meeting this week of the board of trustees.

At a meeting Thursday night, the board of trustees learned proposed state budget cuts could cost the district hundreds of thousands.

New business director Steve Rudy presented the gloomy outlook from the state, saying the district could lose up to $650,000 in Cost of Living Adjustment reductions.

But it isn't just state cuts that will affect the district. Rudy said federal revenue of $200,000 may also be eliminated.

How much of a cut Willows Unified will have to make will depend on what happens in Sacramento.

Avril's hometown beckons

It's the little town where singer Avril Lavigne cut her teeth, but Napanee has other things to recommend it.

It's close to Highway 401 and the main Montreal-Toronto rail line, so the necessary transportation links are there. Kingston and Belleville are within easy reach, so the benefits of a major urban centre are available.

Perhaps best of all, the town has a well-preserved, Victorian-era downtown, as well as established residential neighbourhoods full of mature trees and large, affordable homes with wide verandas and lots of curb appeal.

Cities learning the value of conserving tree canopy

Well before the 2004 hurricanes claimed a single tree, Central Florida cities and counties watched their thick canopies of mature oak, cypress and other trees shrink to accommodate new subdivisions and office parks.

The three storms ripped out 30 percent more of the region's tree cover in some places, providing the impetus and millions of dollars in federal assistance for local governments to plant trees and better manage what's left.

During the past two years, arborists armed with hand-held computers have been trekking through Orlando, Lakeland, Leesburg and other cities, cataloging every tree on public property.

More Letters to the Editor

Santorno's academic justification at last week's school board meeting was weak (the claims made are nothing a community school wouldn't do 10 fold) and her analogy to her own children was disappointing. I don't think of a junior cheerleader as the kind of mentoring a middle school male needs to stay focused. Yikes. If this is such a good idea, why isn't anyone doing it elsewhere? It looks like, smells like, and acts like costs saving masquerading as student benefit.

Why wasn't a plan to give Sealth a Taj Mahal of their own created? Certainly the architectural lack of merit of their building must have at least whispered a tear down at which point cost would be contained by new building construction costs. This is in striking contrast to the complexities and astronomical costs of remodel associated with projects like Roosevelt, Garfield, and Hamilton which I guess from the era they were built gives them something warm and fuzzy to hang onto and go to the bank with.
