| Track World Cup 07-08 Round 3 - CDM
In the sprint, reigning World Champion Victoria Pendleton has had little luck getting the better of the current World Cup leader, Natallia Tsylinskaya (Belarus). Tsylinskaya eliminated the British rider in Sydney in the quarter finals, before being eliminated herself by Aussie Anna Meares. Newcomer Willy Kanis, a Dutch BMX champion, surprised everyone to get the better of Meares in the final. Pendleton found her speed in Beijing, qualifying fastest and hitting the finals against Tsylinskaya only to be defeated in two rounds, but had better luck in the keirin, winning in Sydney and now leads the World Cup in that event. Tsylinskaya leads the sprint standings with 20 points to Kanis and Meares' 17, but it remains to be seen who will come to Los Angeles seeking points and who will save the jet lag and hedge their bets on the next round in Copenhagen.
Iron Horse decision planned
Shelton thinks the Iron Horse is a valuable asset for the city, especially considering Steamboat's high number of seasonal employees. Randall agreed, noting the time it can take to find a home in Steamboat. “Most of the people who want to transition to an apartment or house, it's taking one to two months to do," Randall said. In addition to the staff report, Councilwoman Cari Hermacinski also prepared a financial analysis assessing the two options for the Iron Horse Inn. Her conclusions differ from the staff report, because of different assumptions for revenues and expenses. According to Hermacinski, the redevelopment option would lose $930,782 throughout 10 years, while continuing to operate the inn as it is now would result in a loss of $537,808. City Manager Alan Lanning said Hermacinski's report represents an unusual foray into work traditionally not done by an elected official.

Speaking of which, best thing to move the country forward is to scrap this cabinet altogether. Katalina talked about it in last week's topical discussion. EU bid to freeze out patio heaters
They have only been popular in the UK for little more than a decade, but patio heaters could become history if MEPs vote to ban them today. The EU parliament is expected to back a resolution requiring the use of appliances with low energy efficiency to be phased out. Patio heaters are specifically targeted in the motion, which calls on the EU to act urgently and introduce minimum standards for energy efficiency on such appliances as air-conditioning, television "decoder" boxes and light bulbs. It also calls for the abolition of stand-by mode on electrical appliances. If the ban comes into effect and is enforced, it could cost pubs, restaurants and caterers in the UK up to £250m in lost revenue per year. The use of outdoor heaters increased with the new UK smoking ban, as well as growing use at home as garden accessories for the British summer.
Illegal Alien Advocates Ignore the Real Problem
Two United States Catholic bishops have written to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, asking the agency to adopt policies aimed at assisting families and communities affected by immigration raids. Normally I do not engage in discussions relating to religion, but this issue should be important for all Americans, regardless of their religious orientation. I recently testified before the Indiana State Senate about a bill (SB 335) that would enable the state of Indiana to revoke the business license of any business that repeatedly hires illegal aliens, and provides other measures to enable that state to do the job the federal government won't do where immigration is concerned. During the hearing, I listened to a representative of the Catholic Church talk about the need to honor the dignity of the "undocumented immigrants." For the Catholic Church to take a stand on an issue that has such extreme implications for national security is outrageous. What is also outrageous is the fact that while the Church decries the lack of dignity that the arrest of illegal aliens represents (in the Church's judgment), why is the Church conspicuously absent at those factories and other work sites where illegal aliens are horribly treated? Why is the Church not showing up to protest the terrible conditions under which illegal aliens often live and work? During my long career at the former INS, I found (on many occasions) illegal aliens living in abject squalor.
