This is an updated version of a story posted earlier on Thursday. GRANDVIEW — Robert Talley could not believe it. By about 3 p.m. on Thursday, he had the lift that he and his wife, Ann, had been waiting for, a gift from the Barstow Senior Center. "I just felt, well, if we had that, why not?" said Ethel Bussman, the office manager at the senior center. Ethel said after reading about the struggle Robert and Ann have been through to try to get a lift so Robert could be set upright and clear the mucus and fluid from his lungs, she wanted to be able to help. The senior center often accepts donations of equipment to help ailing senior citizens in the area, and Ethel felt certain they had a lift for Robert. She found one and made arrangements for her husband, Larry, to deliver it. The Talleys, she said, were in tears.
NJ Senate approves abolishing death penalty
Four teenagers are accused in a robbery and assault of students near the Rowan University campus in Glassboro. The case has some similarities to one in October, when Rowan sophomore Donald "Donnie" Farrell of Boonton was killed in a robbery attempt. Pratchett to open planetarium
STAR novelist Terry Pratchett will open the UK's largest planetarium at Winchester's INTECH Science Centre next month. The popular science fiction and children's author will officially unveil the new £650,000 facility on Wednesday, March 19, before it's opened to the public two days later on Good Friday (March 21). Bosses at the Morn Hill attraction said a planetarium had been a burning ambition since opening the science centre in 2002. The 176-seat theatre will feature a variety of astrology shows, including presenter-led displays for schools, licensed pre-recorded films and movies on topical space events, created by INTECH themselves. .
Toyota exec, activist clash at L.A. show
The incident occurred at the end of Toyota's press conference, where Bob Carter, vice president and general manager of the Toyota division, was introducing the 2008 Sequoia full-size SUV. When a man asked Carter why Toyota was suing California over carbon-dioxide emissions regulations, Carter noticed that the man's media badge identified him as Dave Schembri, head of Mercedes-Benz's Smart division. Carter knocked the video camera from the man's hands, and security guards separated the two. .
A rush to rent rich in the Hamptons
If you think it's too early to book your summer vacation in the Hamptons, think again. The first buds of spring may be weeks away, but in the Hamptons, real estate agents say, the rental season is already going full throttle. The season traditionally begins during Presidents' Week, says Judi Desiderio, president and chief executive of Town & Country Real Estate, whose main office is in East Hampton. "By the end of that week, 50 percent of the summer rentals are gone." This year, the season took off at least a month earlier, she says. .
